🌟 "Play is our brain's favourite way of learning" - Diane Ackerman Ever wonder why children play the way they do? Here's a simple infographic which breaks down the 6 different stages of play development. Let's take a look at each stage and learn how each one is super important for their growing brains. 🧠 1️⃣ Unoccupied play (birth to 3 months): At this stage, babies are making a lot of movements with their arms, legs, hands and feet. Parents are also encouraged to do tummy time with their little ones. 2️⃣ Solitary play (3 months to 2 years): Children play alone during this stage and do not interact with other children. They play with toys or explore and experiment with their environment. 3️⃣ Onlooker play (2.5 to 3.5 years): Children will tend to watch others play, but will not engage with them. They will simply observe, or be an onlooker. At this stage, children are developing their observational skills and learning the rules and boundaries around social play. 4️⃣ Parallel play (3.5 to 4 years): Children may be playing with the similar toys, but not interacting with each other. Here, children start to recognise others' emotions and develop empathy. They also learn how to interact with others and develop communication skills. 5️⃣ Associate play (3 to 4 years): This stage involves more interaction and cooperation with peers. Picture children engaged in a group art project, taking turns on the swings, or playing a game of pretend together. Associate play encourages sharing, turn-taking, and the development of empathy and perspective-taking skills. 6️⃣ Cooperative play (4+ years): This is when children work together towards a common goal, whether it's building a Lego masterpiece, playing a team sport, or collaborating on a science experiment. This stage of play fosters teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills, setting the foundation for positive social interactions and relationships.

    • Second stage of play - solitary play

“When you meet one person with autism, you’ve met ONE person with autism. “ At Our Special Story, we see each child as an individual. We see each child as who he or she is. Though it’s come to the end of Autism Awareness month, our commitment to our students will continue to flourish. Just like the unique handprints of our students on this tree, we will help them to sprout in their individual ways to grow taller and taller. 💙
