Happy Friday everyone! Sharing an abstract from 3DBAVARIA’s well written report comparing FDM vs MJF technology and print quality. Key points • FDM is an older technology, while MJF is newer and considered faster and more economical for producing high-quality prototypes and functional parts. Here are the advantages vs disadvantages of FDM vs MJF in 4 key comparison. 1. Component Quality: • MJF (Multi Jet Fusion) produces nearly isotropic components with balanced mechanical properties, while FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) components are weaker in the Z-direction due to layering. • MJF allows for complex structures and greater design freedom due to its thin layers and lack of support structures. • MJF offers uniform surfaces with high detail, while FDM's layering process may result in visible lines. • Post-processing can improve the surface quality of both processes. 2. Cost: • Material costs are a significant factor in pricing 3D printed components. MJF relies more on material costs than FDM due to the nature of powder-based processes. • Smaller part geometries may be more cost-effective in MJF, while FDM is cheaper for large and voluminous components. • Both processes involve manual activities before and after printing, affecting the overall component price. • MJF offers the option for post-processing to achieve high-quality surfaces but at an additional cost. 3.
