Mental Health

Mental Health is
described as a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of a
mental disorder. From the perspective of ‘positive psychology’ or
‘holism’, mental health may include an individual’s ability to enjoy
life, and create a balance between life activities and efforts to
achieve psychological resilience. Mental health can also be defined as
an expression of emotions, and as signifying a successful adaptation to a
range of demands.
The World Health Organization defines mental health as “a state of
well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities,
can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and
fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.
Cultural
differences, subjective assessments, and competing professional
theories all affect how “mental health” is defined. There are different
types of mental health problems, some of which are common, such as
depression and anxiety disorders, and some not so common, such as
schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
A state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an
individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional
capabilities, function in society, and meet the ordinary demands of
everyday life. It is a branch of medicine that deals with the
achievement and maintenance of psychological well-being.
Psychotherapy and Counseling
are
professional activities that utilise an interpersonal relationship to
enable people to develop self-understanding and to make changes in their
lives. Professional counselors and psychotherapists work within a
clearly contracted, principled relationship that enables individuals to
obtain assistance in exploring and resolving issues of an interpersonal,
intra-psychic, or personal nature. Professional Counseling and
Psychotherapy are explicitly contracted and require in-depth training to
utilise a range of therapeutic interventions, and should be
differentiated from the use of counseling skills by other
professionals.
Confidentiality
is
considered of the utmost importance because of the nature of the
therapeutic relationship. Clients discuss past and present situations,
as well as their innermost feelings, so confidentiality is both an
ethical consideration and an important element in the counselor/client
relationship. Its actual definition is “The ethical principle or legal
right that a physician or other health professional will hold secret all
information relating to a patient, unless the patient gives consent
permitting disclosure.”
