Why differentiates FMDS from other design schools? FMDS was founded by its principal and design entrepreneur, Mark Phooi. Mark, started a design company called the First Media (FM) Group and has had a successful 23 years with it. The FMDS pedagogy is one that focuses on Designpreneurship - which is derived from design entrepreneurship - a design management module which marries the innovative, technical and aesthetic aspects of design with its marketing and management in preparing students for working on actual, full-scale projects in the design industry. All lecturers are design professionals hailing from various creative fields. As the classes are small--consisting of no more than 25 students per class--the teaching lecturers are able to engage in more tutorial time per student compared to other design schools. The curriculum includes live design projects, local and overseas industry visitations and industry attachments, which not only expose students to the dynamics of working in real industry situations, but also assist in their smooth transition into an exciting, creative and sustainable design career. In 2011, FMDS was awarded the Council of Private Education's (CPE) EduTrust certification for four years, a first among Singapore design schools In 2013, FMDS, in conjunction with the University of the West of England in Bristol, is offering 20 students a one-year design degree programme with one weeks' residential training.
