In 1881, Daniel Haynes, a cotton gin builder, began making cotton-filled mattresses for his friends. From this humble beginning in Sealy, Texas, he went on to invent a machine that compressed cotton for use in mattresses. His mattress became so popular that he sold patent rights to other markets. The company “Sealy” was then established.
