A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inside of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. It is usually performed by a gastroenterologist, a doctor who specialized in diagnosing and treating conditions of the digestive system.
During a colonoscopy, the doctor will use a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope, which has a light and a camera on the end, to view the inside of the colon. The colonoscope is inserted through the rectum and passed through the entire length of the colon. The procedure is usually done as an outpatient procedure and is performed under conscious sedation to ensure your comfort.
There are several reasons why you might need to undergo a colonoscopy. For example, you may need one if you are experiencing symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain, changes in bowel movements, or rectal bleeding. You may also need a colonoscopy if you are at increased risk for colon cancer due to factors such as a family history of the disease or a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease.
If you are experiencing symptoms or are at risk for colon cancer, it is important to seek medical attention. Contact our clinic to schedule a colonoscopy with one of our experienced gastroenterologists. We are here to help you take control of your digestive health.
